Japanese label, APPLEBUM, has started to drop items from its current Fall/Winter 2010 collection. Its first releases comprise of basic items in iconic APPLEBUM style. The brand has strong ties to hip hop music, and this collection is no exception in terms of hip hop styling with the Tribe Cardigan paying tribute to legendary hip hop group, A Tribe Called Quest. A simple black cardigan with red and dark green color puts a party up on the front, and a single pocket on the bottom left adds that extra touch of detailing. The Check Nel Shirts in blue or red color schemes would never go out of style, and Skull Long Sleeve Polo Shirt refreshes the polo in the APPLEBUM way.
A while back, a statement such as “Women are physically inferior to men” would have been irrefutable. However, in recent years, women have not only proven to be just as intellectually as capable, if not more as we have a growing number of female CEOs running the world at the moment, especially in Hollywood, but they have also started to par with men in terms of physical prowess. As a prelude for the upcoming US Open, New York Times Magazine has created a spread paying tribute to the tennis ladies who are just as muscle bound and formidable, able to send a ball racketing across the court with as much force as men. In this spread, “Women Who Hit Very Hard”, ladies who can hold their own on court such as the US favorites, the Williams, Russia’s Zvonareva, Serbia’s Jankovic and Belgium’s Clijsters have been shot in their display of strength and tenacity on court. As you’re surely aware, upon its original release the Air Jordan 1 did not endear itself to the NBA and first-year commissioner David Stern. The colorful shoe (most NBA footwear at that point was white) was considered a uniform violation and earned Michael Jordan a fine of $5,000 per game, which Nike happily paid for him since the publicity generated was worth much more. The colors and Air Jordan line were eventually accepted if not embraced by the NBA, but this new Air Jordan 1 High “Banned” pays tribute to the early days of the Air Jordan, featuring black X’s over the Air Jordan logo to represent the NBA’s (failed) attempt to censor the shoe. The spirit of Jean-Michel Basquiat lives through this latest installment of capsule product from Reebok. Having seen a nice amount of Basquiat projects from the brand over the last few years, this continues an on-going tribute by Reebok to one of the more intriguing street artists of our time. Featured in the lineup are two graphic t-shirts, a jacket, and a pair of sneakers, all adorned by the art of the late Jean-Michel.
While CC Sabathia may not have hit Whitey Ford or Don Larsen status yet when it comes to his place in the Yankees annals, but today he stands peerless in Yankees pitching history: he has his own shoe. Sort of. More accurately a PE, the Air Jordan Alpha 1 Outdoor CC Sabathia Edition features a reflective black/university blue upper, removable ankle strap, and 27 tally marks along the side the toe, a common practice on Yankees-inspired Nikes paying tribute to the Evil Empire’s 27 World Series titles. And while this landed at Harlem House of Hoops in April, the shoe is available now at non-Foot Locker-affiliated stores such as extrabutterny.com.
In case anyone thought Karl was playing around when he showed his fall collection a couple months back featuring beautiful young women role-playing as plushies, his ready-to-wear fall 2010-2011 collection, which he showed in Tokyo today, shows he was dead serious. And while there were fewer teddy bears attempting to navigate the runway this time, fur was still flying everywhere. On the one hand, I love the furry looks. They actually cause me to bust out laughing when I think about them. On the other hand…well, I suppose there is no downside unless your a Chanel exec, wondering what the market is for rich society women willing to sip tea dressed as a sports team mascot (though oh god how I wish they would!)
Many more furry looks after the flip….the fur underpants–a tribute of sorts I suppose to Gaga/Beyonce–were my faves by far.
The Jordan CP3 Tribute takes Chris Paul’s third signature shoe and crosses it with the legendary Air Jordan III, adding on, among other things, the classic elephant print and oversized Jumpman logo on the back as well as AJIII-inspired colorways. The Jordan CP3 Tribute release is set for July.
Just because the NBA season is not officially over, doesn’t mean that the basketball sneakers stop being made. In fact, despite Chris Paul’s being sidelined very early in the NBA season, the Air Jordan CP3.III Tribute popped up as yet another team Jordan Brand basketball sneaker. And now the limited white/gold Air Jordan CP3.III pictured here has arrived at House of Hoops locations nationwide. With a primarily white base, there are several touches of metallic gold throughout the upper and even a speckled midsole that has been popping up more and more regularly.
If you’re celebrating the latest Lakers’ title, you’re not the only one. Your boy Unique Sole put together this custom pair of Nike Blazer “Black Mamba” to pay tribute to the now five-time champion Kobe Bryant. The shoe, originally an all white perf leather Blazer, was airbrushed using an Iwata compressor, then hit with layers of black, gold and purple Createx paint, including a pretty cool splatter-gradient black-to-purple fade. Next to reveal its custom Adicup merchandise is team Highsnobiety, an online magazine, in cooperation with Berlin retailer, No 74 with the Europe (Berlin) pack. This is another subtle addition to the Adicup series in a timeless white and black colorway which is based on an original 1986 Jersey.
Like the other Adicup Packs, this European collection is composed of a Votary shoe in white leather upper with black three stripes and gold Votary label on the side panel, Adicup 2010 branding in gold embroidery on the tongue, blue inner liner, and clear sole. Paying tribute to one of the most iconic characters in music history, Nike SB will be releasing a quickstrike Dunk High SB inspired by “The Boss”, Bruce Springsteen. While “Born To Run” was the album which pushed the New Jersey musician into spotlight, the new Dunk High SB gets patriotic and references “Born In The USA”, which is also one of Springsteen’s best known singles, and ranked by Rolling Stones to be one of the top 500 songs of all time.
As part of the Stealth capsule collection, Lacoste will be releasing a new collection titled Steel Racquets. The story of the “Steel Raquet” goes back to 1963 when Rene Lacoste developed the world’s first steel tennis racquet. This tennis racquet then went on to earn court time with tennis greats such as Jimmy Connors, Billie Jean King and many others. The racquet has played an indispensable part in 46 grand slam titles from 1966 until 1978. Each sneaker model in this collection pays tribute to the steel racquets by mimicking design details ingrained in the raquets. This is exemplified by the use of metallic mesh, brown leather trimming, matte steel leather and shiny silver crocodile logo. Crisp white shoe laces provide a modern contrast to the sneakers’ vintage looks. Let’s take one more look at the Nike SB Dunk High “Chrome Ball Incident”—release date rumored for July or August. The shoe’s name is borrowed from its designer, the Chrome Ball Incident skate blog, which in turn is taken from an old Neil Blender cartoon, while the design has some throwback roots, using a colorway inspired by the old Airwalk Enigma line while the scissors embroidered on the ankle pays tribute to the bygone trend of cutting down hightops into mid or low skate shoes. While the original Dream Team of the 1992 Olympics featured arguably the most stacked roster in the history of the sport, the shoes on the feet of those players were nothing to scoff at either, including the Air Jordan VII, Air Force 180 and Air Ballistic High, to name a few. Largely an amalgam of those second two shoes, although bits of the Air Jordan VII midsole seem to have found their way in as well, the new Nike Air Zoom Barcelona pays tribute to the Dream Team, so it’s fitting that the first color to release will be the familiar “Olympic” colorway, featuring red, white, navy and gold.
