Sneaker: Nike Air Force 1

Air Force 1, released in 1982, was the first basketball shoe to include Nike’s (NKE) Air technology, which embeds airbag cushions in the soles of the shoes. But the sneaker’s success came largely off the court, as a fashion accessory embraced first by the hip-hop community and now by just about everybody.

Nike did not anticipate this level of popularity. The company largely stopped making AF1 after one year and didn’t resume full-scale production until almost two decades later, when it was brought back by popular demand. Now it’s a staple product; the all-white, low-cut version has been the best-selling sneaker in the U.S. since 2007; overall the brand sold 11 million pairs in 2009 for more than $1 billion, according to researcher Sports One Source. It has also become a blank slate for designers to experiment with different themes, materials, and color combinations. About 1,700 versions have been produced, using everything from 18-carat gold to chenille, to straw, to crocodile skin. Nike, in Beaverton, Ore., touted the shoe’s hip-hop credibility for AFI’s 25th anniversary in 2007, commissioning a song featuring Kanye West. It keeps up a rigorous series of limited editions dedicated to such things as Black History Month and the five boroughs of New York (the latter released just last month). Oh, and some people still wear them to play basketball. —Matt Townsend

As part of their recent World Basketball Festival launch, Jordan Brand unveiled a quartet of fresh footwear looks which will form their ‘For The Love Of The Game’ pack. Featuring the Air Jordan 2010 Outdoor, the Jordan Pre-Game XT and the Air Jordan IX Retro, as well as the Air Jordan Alpha I Outdoor, this University Blue themed collection has every corner covered – retro, outdoors, style and Jordan himself.

The Air Jordan 2010 Outdoor has been designed from the ground-up for rugged blacktop play and its Uni-Blue colourway is symbolic of Michael Jordan’s personal motto on which the pack is based. The AJ 2010 Outdoor also features a fitting six-row stitch pattern across the forefoot to commemorate his six chips. Designed under Nike’s Considered Design ethos, this kick comes complete with a top loaded forefoot Zoom Air unit and heel Air-Sole unit for impact protection, as well as a contoured Phylon midsole, solid rubber herringbone outsole, internal shank plate and molded foam collar.

The Jordan Pre-Game XT on the other hand is a ‘revolutionary’ basketball training shoe that has been conceived to help athletes become more agile during footwork-focused drills. The Pre-Game XT features a mesh vamp, sculpted Phylon midsole and multi-directional herringbone inspired outsole. Looks dope to us!

The Air Jordan IX Retro is apparently inspired by Japanese culture. It has Air-Sole units in the forefoot and heel, a rubber outsole with outrigger, innersleeve and a lightweight polyurethane midsole. Likewise, the Air Jordan Alpha I Outdoor is a revamped version of the sneaker that started it all. Featuring a full-length Zoom Air unit, Phylon midsole, lightweight durable synthetic materials and enhanced interior comfort lining, this Alpha 1 joins its JB brethren for one fitting 25th Anniversary footwear celebration.

Bon appetit Jordan lovers!

WBF-Air-Jordan-2010-Outdoor-6-2 [NEW RELEASE] JORDAN FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME PREVIEW

During the recent Jordan Brand product launch at the World Basketball Festival media announcement, JB Creative Director Mark Smith had this to say about the Air Jordan 2010 Outdoor…

The shoes and products are also a window into some of the stuff you’ll be seeing in the future from Jordan brand – kind of bold, iconic, moment driven and deep story telling. Michael’s involved throughout the entire process of designing any of the game shoes and much of the footwear, apparel and rest of the line. But this one in particular, the AJ 2010 Outdoor, we keep going back and forth with them when we did samples and started showing him things along the way. Obviously making sure performance was key to the product and then secondary was being able to tell the story in a number of ways. I think back to basics was key to making just a great, great basketball shoe that we wanted to see on court.

In Carolina when he actually ascended to being on the scene, we thought colour was so significant to this moment for him as in ascended into who he was and who he was going to be, we decided to just tag the colour on everything for the festival. It’s actually a brand relevant story for us, brand relevant color and obviously around the man himself. Putting the heart and basketball together kind of significant story telling device. Even on the inside there’s the script, "For the Love of the Game." It all combines to give a shout out to why we’re out there playing basketball.

We picked a great partner in getting this product on court, I think the best way you do that is putting an athlete in the product who can authenticate it in performance. Dwyane Wade was the perfect athlete at the perfect time.

We really wanted to make this shoe a product that our players are out there playing basketball all year long, but this time in the summer you’re out there playing you’re taking an extra beating and wanted it to fit the way the Game shoe did on the indoor court actually on the outdoor court, but also just make sure it was appropriate for the outdoor player.

We really took the 2010 outsole and first thing on the ground we just made it a little bit more durable for the outdoor game. It’s bottom loaded zoom. It’s a very simple outdoor platform. It’s got a little bit thicker rubber for durability and obviously the flexibility and torsion is right there. We added toe protection as well, for a little bit more out there game. Free floating flex cover in the forefoot, again just for durability. The straps we kind of went back into the archives and we kind of brought that back in more of a modern way. Very simple dynamic, not a lot of tricks on this one. We just wanted to keep it basic. Very breathable, a lot of perfs on the outside. Fit unit around the collar, back to how things fit against your feet. Great sock liner. Overall just a nice durable version of the 2010 Game shoe. The outdoor game gives you an opportunity to play rougher and I think we addressed that here in this product.

In the summer of 2010 New York is going to become the home and heart of basketball and we wanted to use that as a great, great opportunity to highlight some of best products for some of our best athletes out there. The best athletes being everyday heroes out there on the courts, beating up these products, beating them up in our products. Using a great color device, a great statement from MJ to tie it all together. I think the University Blue is going to be a great color to see, and any time you see it out on the courts you’re going to know it’s performance, it’s going to be Jordan and it’s for the real reason kids are out there playing, because they love the game.

Aol. 25th Year Celebration The Project on Creativity + 2nd Collection

Last night, AOL brought their 25th Anniversary celebration downtown to the Bowery’s New Museum and an after party at the Bowery Hotel a few blocks away. For the celebration, AOL partnered with the legendary artist Chuck Close and launched The Project on Creativity. For a period of a year, AOL and Chuck Close will honor the creative minds that has shaped the AOL culture and help them become icons. Through this partnership, AOL will award 25 scholarships of $25,000 to budding artists, writers, producers, journalists and others working in the arts. In addition, AOL has partnered with 41 artists from around the world to create original artwork for the underlay of the AOL logo. If you go to AOL.com or AOL Mail, you will see these 41 2nd Collection artist creations live. One of those chosen artists was our close friend Dave White who created a new piece entitled “Cheeseburger” and fits perfectly as the underlay of the new ‘Aol.’ logo.

The event was held on two floors of the New Museum, the ground floor featured a large digital display showcasing all of the chosen artist in the 2nd Collection. In addition, on the ground floor were the actual art works of four of the forty-one artists including Phillip Low’s Red Prism, Dave White’s Cheeseburger, Rachel Thomas’ Puzzle Love, and James Taylor’s Rainbow City. To see all of the 41 artists works, check out aolartists.com. The celebration continued in the top floor Sky Room of the New Museum with drinks, small bites and toward the end of the night, pastries. Portraits as part of The Project on Creativity by Chuck Close were on display and Chuck Close himself was there greeting guests and fans. Fitting with the downtown location for the celebration and project launch, the after party was held at the Bowery Hotel just a few blocks up from the New Museum. Guest of AOL and the artists continued the party with more drinks, pastries, birthday cupcakes and the music of John Legend. Both events were nicely put together and as always it was great hanging out with Dave White and his NYC family.

OSHMAN'S is one of Japan's best known sneaker stores... and would you believe they are now 25 years old? To help celebrate their anniversary, they have teamed up with New Balance to create their version of the classic NB 1700 model. Using the best black leather the Japanese Yen can buy, OSHMAN'S added black and white ripstop nylon to complete the linear effect! Pitched as the marriage between "Sports and Lifestyle", these NB 1700s will be released in June, only from OSHMAN'S.

In the year of 1985, the M1300 was released as the New Balance flagship model. The best efficiency of cushioning depends on ENCAP technology which was used on this model first time ever on their history. After 14 years later, on the year of 1999, M1700 as a symbolic model of NEW BALANCE was released just before new century. This high-end model made NEW BALANCE freaks satisfied enough. You just can’t imagine how comfortable it was to be wearing. Much more than people were imagining. It was rarely (at this period) used a big piece of ABZORB for of course good cushioning, but more... “FULL SLIP LASTING” for excellent fit.

ABOUT OSHMAN'S
OSHMAN’S was established in 1985, the same year that M1300 was released. The first store was opened in HARAJUKU, TOKYO. We have been recognizing as the sporting goods company originally from United States, and selected many items which has drawn the line of any others selected. Therefore, we could become one of the most trustable shops in the nation. This year, we turned 25 years since established. For 25th anniversary, we collaborated with NEW BALANCE on its exclusive model of 1700.

This new model was designed with rip-stop check pattern with the combination of black and white colors, and titled with the initial of “S&L” which inspired the line connects between the point of Sports and Lifestyle. These two points are also the policy of OSHMAN’S ABZORB was used on the heel part of insole and the contrast of black and white colors made the printed logo of OSHMAN’S and NEWBALANCE accentuated. XXV as the roman number of 25 was arranged on the tip of the shoelace as the lace cover for the special impression of 25th anniversary. Nylon shank on the mid sole was placed such as a hoof. This function is good for better stability and better fit.
